Does Homebrewing Save Money? Part 2

After reading Lee’s post (see: Does Homebrewing Save Money?), and the included Mint.com article about the financial aspects of homebrewing, I decided to take a look at my overall spending and see where I end up. My experience in cost forecasting and creating spreadshets as well as running a P/L for a construction equpment service department kind of makes me look at the numbers as a habit.

I took every piece of equipment and priced it based on either what I paid or what someone else who gave it to me as a gift would have paid. I also took every recipe and priced it based on the cost of the ingredients. Additionally, I added a dollar per gallon of water used for each batch to account for the cost of the water (both in brewing, cleaning, and chilling), the electricity or propane use to heat the wort, and any ice that my have been used. I decided not to add the value of my personal labor to the cost since it is a joyful hobby and I could not determine the value of the culture that the homebrew scene adds to my hobby.

When it is all said and done, extract brewing was significantly less expensive than all grain brewing, which was unexpected. The amount of water needed to chill the all grain is potentially the largest contributor to this. However, at an average of $12 per 6-pack for all grain brewing, I think it is still a great deal.
