Hitachino Nest XH
To conclude Hitachino Nest week at BDR, I chose XH, a strong ale aged in sake casks.
My first impressions weren’t great. After yesterday’s selection I was afraid of another let down. The beer pours a nice light reddish-brown with a bit of head and a crisp amount of carbonation. The flavors were immediately a bit of a mess. Fire-y ginger, super sweet malts and bitter hops stood alone in one corner with the staunch sake flavor in the other. It was interesting; but not necessarily enjoyable.
But once it warmed up, the beer settled into a nice sipper. Normally I’m not a fan of this sort of thick sweet malt profile. With the sake and slight alcohol tinge, it mingled into a very nice experience.
I’m glad I stuck with this beer. By the end, I was wishing for another bottle. This is what Kiuchi Brewery does best. XH is a merger of the east and west that is a worthy addition to the world’s beer culture.
