The Porter Beer Bar, Atlanta GA
As mentioned before, my family travels to Atlanta quite often throughout the year. I do my best to find myself sitting at The Porter Beer Bar each time. The Porter is found in the heart of the Little 5 Points district. Little 5 Points is the hip and trendy place to go hang out on a Saturday, and at the same time one of the grittiest and most alternative minded place in Atlanta. With music venues (The Star Bar and Variety Playhouse) and so many wonderful shops and eateries (Wax ‘n Facts, one of the greatest vinyl stores on earth, has been selling music there for over 30 years), The Porter fits right in. Located in an odd narrow store front, you are greeted by a long bar. If you squeeze past the length of that bar the building opens up to a dining area with large booths. The layout can be a bit uncomfortable depending how busy they are; but it somehow adds to the charm of the place!
They easily have one of the best beer lists in the city. Without fail I always find several beers on the tap list that I thought I would never get to try, or even new existed! The bottle list is insanely large, even a bit too much to process at times. With lots of rarities and oddities I always have plenty to choose from on their extensive menu of over 800 beers. Some of the beers I tried here for the first time include Dogfish Head Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew & Immort and New Belgium Valentine’s Ale. In addition to this great beer list the food at The Porter might be some of the best in town. They serve lunch, dinner and brunch from 11am to 4pm on Saturday & Sunday. You can simply munch on some hand made salt and vinegar popcorn or goat cheese fritters, or have a world class meal featuring amazing daily specials. I have never had a bad meal here.
The day after Thanksgiving I ventured out to do some beer shopping and stopped in for a late lunch and a couple of beers. There were a ton of big ABV beers I wanted to try, but being the responsible drinker I am I opted to go for some session beers so I could still drive myself home. For my first round I selected the collaboration between The Wrecking Bar & Wild Heaven called Wrecking Heaven, a fantastic low ABV beer I previously reviewed. I eventually settled on the Buffalo Shrimp Po Boy (Georgia wild shrimp, homemade chow-chow and blue cheese) paired with the Bell’s Smoked Lager. The beer was pretty good, basically just Lager Of The Lakes with a mild amount of smokiness, but it did pair very well with the spicy sandwich. As always everything was great, and I can hardly wait to go back again!
