Westbrook Bearded Farmer 1: Hughey
Westbrook Brewing Co.’s new Bearded Farmer line celebrates local farmers as well as the great taste of Belgian-style farmhouse ales. The first in the line, “Hughey” is named for a South Carolina farmer that picks up the brewery’s spent grains. Typical of Westbrook, the label art is fantastic, with a wonderful vintage-Americana meets Indian decorative design.
Westbrook knows how to make a refreshing, yeast-forward beer, as evidenced by their White Thai. With Hughey, the tart yeast is complimented by mealy sweet fruit. The rye is evident in the bread-like finish and a pepper spice adds the perfect splash of complexity. This beer is incredibly easy to drink, almost like an amped up Florida Cracker.
Hughey pours a lovely golden orange with a thick, frothy head and is well suited to complement a meal or be a thirst quencher in warmer weather. It’s available now in 750mL bottles. But don’t wait, it’s a one-time only release and Bearded Farmer No. 2 is hitting store shelves right now.
