Savannah Bee Co’s Mead Bar
Savannah Bee Company’s Broughton Street retail location has quickly become an ideal location for visitors looking for local charm and residents looking for the perfect gift. The honey tasting bar and refreshment options, along with the kid-play bee hive make the shop a great spot to recuperate while engaging in epic shopping trips or touring sessions.
The reputation as an ideal respite has increased ten-fold with the opening of Savannah Bee Company’s new mead tasting bar. For $5, you can sample six different varieties of mead in just-right 1.5 oz pours.
They currently offer a strong line up of meads, melomels and pyments from Michigan’s St. Ambrose Cellars. If you don’t know your way around the specific language of mead, don’t worry. The staff is extremely knowledgeable and by the end of your tasting, you’ll walk away with not only the warm tingle of fermented honey – but also a better understanding of mead wines, their various incarnations and their perfect pairings.
On my visit, the following labels were offered in the tasting. Each was also available for purchase by the bottle or case.
Star Thistle (mead)
Semi-dry mead with a big floral aroma and a simple, sweet flavor profile that lets the honey shine. It’s a very bright, open drink with tropical fruit notes.
Tupelo Ambrosia (mead)
The south Georgia/northern Florida local Ogeechee Tupelo honey is the obvious flavor touchstone; but this mead also features a delightful warm spice blend.
Dancing Bare Ambrosia (pyment)
Pyments are a combination of meads and wines and the addition of white grapes does make this marriage a nice transitional drink for white wine drinkers.
Rose Ambrosia (pyment)
The mead is accented with red wine in this blend and it creates a strawberry-jam like flavor without any of the saccharine sweetness.
Razzmatazz (melomel)
Wild raspberry is added to Star Thistle honey mead ingredients for this fruit/mead hybrid. The raspberry is wonderfully fresh and true to the best characteristics of the fruit.
Cherry Amore (melomel)
Served with a sliver of dark chocolate, the tart cherry authenticity masks a slightly smokey character with warm spicing.
