Bell’s Third Coast Old Ale
Bell’s Third Coast Old Ale is an American Barleywine. This beer was bottled August 2013 and was aged just about nine months. Caramel sweetness to start with lots of brown sugar, ripe dates and an alcohol sting similar to a dry sherry. Earthy, dry and bitter hops are adding a nice amount of balance. At 10.2% ABV it’s not surprisingly a little on the boozy side, becoming more obvious as it warms. This doesn’t crack my top tier for the style, but it is also very far from being just average. This is a high quality American Barleywine that is not too terribly hard to find. Well worth picking up a bottle or two when you see it, I can’t see any reason why this wouldn’t continue to develop flavors over time.
