Smuttynose Satchmo is an American Porter, Short Batch #13. This beer is a collaboration between Smuttynose and Portsmouth’s Black Trumpet Bistro using two fungi, brewer’s yeast (sacchromyces cerevisiae) and black trumpet mushrooms (craterellus cornucopioides).
The beer pours very dark brown with a tan head. This is considerably dry and earthy with a pretty standard amount of roast for a porter. The mushroom influence is very obvious right from the start (that dry/earthiness), but I don’t think I would have placed the flavor as mushrooms if I didn’t know they were used ahead of time.
Interesting concept with really good results, I was glad to find that this still tasted like a beer and not some kind of weird carbonated mushroom drink type thing!
