Allagash Odyssey
Allagash Odyssey is an American Strong Dark Ale. From the website: a dark wheat beer aged for ten months, a portion in oak barrels and the remainder in stainless tanks. This review is for the 2013 vintage aged 1 1/2 years.
This pours a nice brown color with hues of red and orange when held up to the light. A few big whiffs reveal a rich malt as well as some muted raisins and brown sugar. The taste is incredibly complex for a wheat beer: dates and figs, a slight roast, candi sugar, dry toasted oak and vanilla, and a slight bit of alcohol taste is hanging there from the 10.4% ABV. There is a slight sour like edge to this as well, not sure if that is due to the aging or not. (Allagash says this is ideal within two years)
Just another Allagash creation that should be on every must try list.
