Alvinne Melchior Calvados Barrel Oak Aged
Alvinne Melchior Calvados Barrel Oak Aged is a Belgian Strong Pale Ale. The brewery description is as follows: Ale brewed with mustard seeds and aged for 6 months in Calvados barrels that contained cognac for 10 years and calvados for 8 years. The barrels were found at a local farm in France. Tried this on draft at The Bier Haus here in Savannah.
A beautiful pour with a nice large fluffy head. This really smells great, getting lots of sweet malt, caramel and booze. The taste has a lot of classic Belgian yeast with a blast of sweetness from the cognac really coming through. The mustard seed was a bit of a concern, but it works really well. It isn’t that big at all, just a hint of it comes out with a mild rye like spiciness. A tad boozy on the taste, but that was not unexpected or a problem for me at all.
Probably not a common find at your neighborhood bar, but it is more than worth a try if you ever see it on draft!
