One Block At A Time – Week Eleven
I’ve tried many methods to kick start a regular running routine, but the only thing that really seems to work is what I call the “one block at a time” method. I plan to run 3 times a week, and go 1 block further each time. Simple as that. (Except I know myself, and it will never be as simple as that) Without a mini goal in mind, I just have a hard time committing to running. I hope that this weekly blog will help me to not quit this time, and maybe finally get into better shape! Who knows, maybe it will help motivate you too.
DAY TWENTY-SEVEN: Monday 12/22/14 Not my best run today. Since I have trepidations about getting all my runs in the next two weeks, I’ll consider it a success. It was misty and gray today, it felt a lot colder than it was too. Slow, slow, slow pace today, and my knees were surprisingly sore. One more block.
This will be the easiest day for me to commit to running though the next two weeks, and I could not skip it. It was really hard to get up at 7am to stick with my schedule when I totally had the ability to sleep in this morning. Tomorrow will be even tougher, we have an appointment scheduled at 9am and this would mean getting up even earlier to stay within my normal routine.
DAY TWENTY-EIGHT: Tuesday 12/23/14 If you would have told me a year ago I would have gotten out of my warm bed at 6:30 in the morning to get a run in before 9:00, I would have said you were crazy. Yet that is just what I did, and more than a few times I wondered what I was doing out running on a chilly, dark and foggy Tuesday morning. Obviously I am happy I chose to go run (it feels good to be dedicated to something), but it was a struggle today. I was running on some serious dehydration legs. Too much beer and not enough water over the weekend had my legs and calves tightening up right from the start. Having to stop for traffic a few times at the end of my run didn’t help much either, so hard to get going again when your legs hurt! Still managed one more block today, I’m proud I didn’t give in to that comfy bed this morning. Sort of.
Thursday 12/25/14 No run today. Hey, give me a break! It’s Christmas morning after all, and I need to find out what Santa brought. Hope to go out for a run with my wife sometime tomorrow.
Have a Merry Christmas!
