Service Brewing Barleywine (Cask)
Service Brewing Barleywine is an English style Barleywine. This was the special cask beer released for the Toys for Tots benefit event held at the brewery tasting room in mid-November.
The beer is a very nice dark brown/caramel color. The carbonation is a bit low, but that is obviously to be expected from a cask beer. I am initially shocked by my first sip. The huge hop forward bitterness you usually get for a young barleywine was not there. That’s not to say it wasn’t hoppy, it just wasn’t dominating the palate, it seems the cask itself might have mellowed this out quite a bit. Speaking of the cask, that oak was really adding a lot to this beer. Sweet and malty on the front end, with a ton of vanilla and dry oak form the wood.
This was very impressive, but I am also hopeful to try this on it’s own with no barrel or cask aging. I would love to get an even better idea of what the base beer is like! Another fantastic R&D offering.
