Crooked Stave Surette Provision Saison
Crooked Stave Surette Provision Saison is aged in oak barrels, 6.2% ABV. This review is for vintage 2014 / Batch 14.
This saison looks a lot more like a typical beer than the other two Crooked Stave offerings I’ve tried so far. This pours with a brownish-gold color and a quickly fading head that is nearly gone before a minute or two. Getting a light bit of tartness and some mild Belgian funk on the nose, hints of apricots and peaches, and a touch of caramel. The taste of this is tart and complex, but still fairly approachable. A quick hit of lactic sourness is replaced by some sweet malt and grain. The extended oak barrel aging adds a perfect woody flavor to the beer, but it isn’t too dry or overwhelming. I’m getting some lemon and orange citrus, a slight bit of vanilla here and there as well. This also carries a very classic/rustic Saison yeast character that just can’t be beat.
Once again I am thoroughly impressed, really looking forward to trying some more Crooked Stave along the way!
