Second Self Mole Porter
Second Self Mole Porter is an American Porter, 6.5%. This is a bottle of a DRAFT ONLY release that BDR received to review, from the website: …reminiscent of the oaxacan mole sauce. We combines California, Pasella, and Chipotle CHILIES with CINNAMON, CLOVES, and COCOA nibs to create this ROBUST porter packed with flavor to warm you up this winter.
This pours with a nice dark brown color, a little red hues and a good bit of caramel color coming through around the edges as well. A very nice light brown head sits on top of the beer. The aroma is not huge but it is solid, a mild bit of roast and cinnamon/clove spice, maybe just a hint of the chilies, but not in a spicy way. The chocolate dominates the taste, I’m gettingĀ a semi-sweet hot (but not hot) chocolate flavor that mixes with the spices. This beer is in no way spicy in a hot pepper kind of way, more cinnamon and clove but as with the aroma there is some vegetal pepper flavor as well.
This seemed kind of average at first but it really grew on me as I drank it. Not sure how far this will make it from Atlanta, but it’s worth a special trip to the bar when/if it shows up near you.
