Uinta Port O’ Call
Uinta Port O’ Call is a Belgian Strong Dark Ale that has been aged in port wine barrels, 9.4% ABV. I picked this up at a Total Wine in Florida at the end of 2015, I did not even look for a date and I now see this was bottled 01/17/15. I’m glad this is a big beer that tends to age well!
This pours with a dark plum like red color with a good off white head that hangs around exceptionally well in my tulip glass. I’m getting a fairly typical Belgian style dark fruity aroma with no real evidence of the wine barrel aging. Again this is a solid Belgian Dark Ale on the palate with your typical dark fruits and a mild amount of spice from the yeast. There’s the wine barrel in the taste! I’m getting cherry fruit and dry wood notes from the port wine barrel itself. Although I feel barrel and beer compliment each other quite well, I think you might need to be a fan of barrel aging in general to really get into this one.
Turns out the pre-aging on this one worked out rather well, kind of glad I didn’t notice the date, might have passed if I did!
