Blackberry Farm Brewery Spring Saison
Blackberry Farm Brewery Spring Saison is brewed with floor malted wheat and spiced with orange peel, coriander and grains of paradise, 6.2% ABV. This review is for the 2016 vintage, bottle provided for review.
The beer pours with a surprisingly clear straw color with some gold highlights and a pretty white head. Subsequent pours did create increasing cloudiness as I reached the yeast collected in the bottom of the bottle. A steady stream of fast moving bubbles continuously rise up from the bottom of my glass. The nose is mild with aromas of soft white bread, wheat, and a slight fruitiness with some spiciness both from the specialty spices and classic saison yeast strain. On the palate is some delicate and creamy wheat upfront that is complimented by a touch of fruity orange sweetness. The finish is rather dry with some notes of lemon, generic Wit style spices, as well as a strong amount of classic saison yeast funkiness. The carbonation is on the high side, maybe a bit too much for my tastes.
This goal here was clearly a hybrid between a Witbier and a Saison, and they have done a rather good job of accomplishing their goal. This is refreshing and light as you would expect from a Witbier, but the Sasion yeast is adding a ton of extra character and flavor. I have not been much in the mood for Saisons over the past 6 to 12 months or so, but these quality offerings from Blackberry Farm Brewery are getting me a bit more exited about the style again!
