Weyerbacher Sunday Morning Stout
Weyerbacher Sunday Morning Stout is an American Double/Imperial Stout aged in bourbon barrels with coffee, 11.3% ABV. Bottled on 02/04/16, opened on 04/23/16, best by 02/04/18. There has been a lot of buzz about this beer, and I was pleased to find it on a recent trip to Atlanta.
This pours with a deep black color, no light shinning through the glass. The head was rather big with a dark brown color, but settled to a 1/2 inch of creamy tan foam. Lacing for days on this one. Holy smokes this is one great smelling beer! The coffee dominates the first few sniffs, but once I get accustomed to it I am getting complex layers of chocolate, roast, bourbon, vanilla and sweet toffee. The bourbon barrel is really strong on the taste, sweet and boozy with a strong hint of barrel char. Again this is still a complex tasting stout with flavors of roasted malts, mild chocolate, sweet cream, vanilla and finishes with a mild hop bitterness. The feel is just how I like this kind of beer, smooth and creamy with a full body. The carbonation is a little low, but I love it just the way it is. That might come into play a little if you play to age this for a while, but this is drinking perfect right now.
I have heard a lot of the inevitable “better than KBS” comments when this one came out, and in all honesty it is well deserved. After having the 2016 vintage of Founders KBS just the other night… I think I like this better. I am kind of kicking myself for not picking up an extra four pack of this spring seasonal when I had the chance.
