Jailhouse Last Request
Jailhouse Last Request is an American Double/Imperial Stout, 8% ABV. This beer is 40% fresh Breakout Stout, and 60% Heaven Hill bourbon barrel Breakout Stout that had been aged for one year. This review is for the 2015 vintage.
This pours with your typical dark color, and a big tan head coming from an extremely gentle pour. Ohhh, I really like this aroma on this one. The smell is of sweet chocolate, some roasted malt, a mild bit of smoke, and some moderate bourbon as well. Interesting flavor here, but I wish it matched the aroma a little more. Dark chocolate, black coffee, burnt caramel, a little vanilla, bitter char and some bourbon are coming out on the palate. I was concerned about the carbonation after the pour, and this is sadly hurting the feel of the beer. With a little bit of cardboard flavor coming out in the finish I’m wondering if there is maybe a bit of oxidation going on with this bottle.
This problems I’m having with this could be a bottle to bottle issue, and even with the slight over carb, this is still not too shabby at all.
