Revelry Brewing Quadtum Leap
Revelry Brewing Quadtum Leap is an American Barleywine, 13% ABV. This collaboration with Dark Horse is labeled as a Quadrupel India Pale Ale, with “it’s a barleywine, duh” in parenthesis. It’s a little corny, but I like the homage to late 80’s/early 90’s television show Quantum Leap on the label. The name coming from the fact this was brewed on leap day 2016.
This is an absolutely beautiful looking beer. It has a stunning ruby red color with some caramel highlights, a wonderful light tan head with perfect retention. Malty and hoppy on the nose, just like an American Barleywine should be. I’m smelling some notes of caramel, raisins, and some mango and pine from the hops. This is one incredibly sweet beer, almost more so than your average English style Barleywine. Big and malty with flavors of brown sugar, raisins, figs, and a hint of cherry. The hops are surprisingly hidden for the style and they are adding a mild amount of bitterness and just a hint of citrus and earth to the flavor. Rather syrupy in the mouth-feel, but it works for this big sipper.
A bit different, but this is a really nice take on the style. No need to age this one, it is more than ready right now. If there a few of these bottles still floating around I’d grab one and pop it open.
