Second Self Maverick & Gose
Second Self Maverick & Gose has no ABV listed on the can, packaged on 06/08/16, opened on 08/09/16. A bit of a stretch on the Top Gun pun in the name, but I guess it is clever enough.
This pours with a rapidly fading white head on top of a slightly hazy lemon yellow beer that has some golden orange highlights. I’m not in love with the aroma on the one. I’m getting a lot of what I’d call soggy sourdough bread on the nose; no real tartness, saltiness, spiciness or fruity/yeasty funk. The taste is a huge improvement. Moderate salt is on the palate immediately, and it lingers well through the taste and into the finish. Some light fruity notes of lemon, mild spices, and a touch of cereal grain round out the taste. The beer has a pleasantly mild tartness to it, nothing approaching The Danger Zone. The mouth-feel is a bit thin, even for this style. Maybe a touch more carbonation is in order overall.
If I can find a way past the aroma, this could end up being a late entry onto the summertime beer list for me. It is really hitting the spot after another long, hot day at the brewery.
