Ballast Point The Homework Series Batch No. 7 – Session Saison is 4.5% ABV. This series pays homage to the homebrewer and the days when Ballast Point was called Home Brew Mart. A great feature of the series is the fact that they give you the recipe to brew for yourself!
This beer pours with a slightly hazy light gold color with a nice white head with excellent retention. I am quite pleased with the aroma of this beer, it has a nice combination of mild fruitiness, Belgian yeast and spice, and a little touch of grain as well. Nothing over the top on the nose, but this smells… you know, like a Saison. The taste starts with a nice mild pepper note then moves to a touch of bread and grain, then some classic Belgian bubble gum and banana. The beer finishes with a dryness that blends with the initial pepper that is rounding out the flavor profile.
I can’t say that this is a life changing Saison, but it is highly drinkable and comes at a fantastic price point. Getting a copy of a solid base Saison recipe is a genuine bonus if you are a homebrewer. You could easily add an endless amount of flavors to this beer with additions at the end of the boil and/or in the secondary.
