Ommegang Soothsayer is a Belgian Strong Dark Ale, 8.9% ABV. Ommegang gets back to basics and leaves the frills out of this one; this beer is purely malt, hops and yeast.
Soothsayer has a nice dark brown color and a gorgeous light brown head. A combination of sweet dark fruit, semi-sweet chocolate, and Belgian yeast spice greet the nose. The taste is very similar with the dark fruits standing out, but the chocolate and Belgian yeast make their way into the flavor in short order as well. This beer does have a bit more complexity than the aroma, I am also tasting and interesting bit of what seems to be smoked licorice. That odd licorice flavor is working surprisingly well with the other flavors. At 8.9% this is certainly a big beer, but it is drinking even bigger than that with a good bit of alcohol making it into the taste.
I wouldn’t want to tackle 750ml bottle of this on my own, but this is another good beer to share and sip during the colder fall and winter months.
