Dogfish Head Beer For Breakfast Stout
Dogfish Head Beer For Breakfast Stout is a Milk/Sweet Stout brewed with coffee, spices, scrapple, and maple syrup, 7.4% ABV. This review is for the 2016 version of this beer.
Perfect black pour with a fluffy tan head that settles to thick layer on the beer. The nose is pretty much all coffee for me at first, but after a little warming some smoke and cinnamon come out on the nose. Sweet chocolate and a big helping of smokey roasted malt hit my palate first. The smokiness turns to more of a char and licorice flavor with some notes of allspice and a little of the maple syrup coming through. The coffee that was so strong on the nose seems really muted until the aftertaste. I’m going to guess that it’s in the taste throughout, but being overpowered by so many strong flavors. I’ve never had scrapple, so I can’t gather what it is adding. I’m going to guess some of the big smokiness can be attributed to it.
There are several “breakfast” beers I would prefer to this one, but I am really enjoying the combo of sweetness and smokiness going on here.
