Avondale Battlefield IPA
Avondale Battlefield IPA clocks in at a sturdy 6.8% ABV. Canned on 11/01/16, opened on 02/15/16. At three and a half months of age this should still be very drinkable, but not as fresh as I prefer for review purposes. Since this isn’t a beer I can normally get a hold off, I decided to give it a whirl anyway.
The beer pours with a slightly hazy golden color and a solid off white head. The head retains fairly well and settles to thin layer with a thicker ring around the edge of the glass. A combination of sweet malt, moderate pine and mild citrus immediately greats the nose. As the beer warms up a bit the hop aroma turns a bit spicier. The taste starts with some caramel and biscuit malt and has a good bit of bitter grapefruit rind and pine. The hops turn more herbal and a touch medicinal mid-taste before a sharp and bitter finish.
Maybe a touch too bitter forward for my tastes, but Battlefield is a well crafted IPA that is well worth a try if you are in their current distribution network.
