Mikkeller It’s Alright! & Funky E Star
On a recent trip to Atlanta I picked up a couple of Mikkeller beers I had never seen before, which really isn’t hard to since they seem to release a new beer every 23.7 seconds! Man those guys are prolific.
It’s Alright!: Belgian Pale Ale. Bready malts with earthy and floral hops. There is an overbearing amount of pepper/herbal spiciness. The beer is lightly funky with some a little lemon near the finish. I was expecting a bit more funk and sourness given the use of a wild Belgian yeast strain and brettanomyces. All in all this beer has the perfect name (minus the exclamation point), it’s just alright.
Funky E Star: Belgian Strong Pale Ale. This is more of a slightly funky Dubbel to me. A tease of sourness, candy sugar, a hint of nutty toffee, sweet dark fruits. More sweet candy sugar mixes with a good bit of hops on the finish, a little funkiness from the brett as well. Very sweet overall and the 9.39% abv is nowhere to be seen. This is a very strange, but enjoyable beer.
