More Adventures Of A New Runner
You probably haven’t gotten anything out of my recent running posts, that is because they don’t exist. Truth be told after my knee finally started feeling better I jumped on the excuse train… destination beer gut. It’s too hot, it’s too humid, it’s raining, it’s sunny, I have to write this beer review, this beer review took to long to write, I’m tired, my knee isn’t feeling right… so many excuses. For the past few months I certainly wasn’t a new runner.
Well today is my birthday, and although I am happy to have made it 38 years, I am not too happy about the kind of shape I have gotten into this summer. I may never be as dedicated a runner as I am a beer drinker, but I HAVE to do a better job of keeping myself in shape. It might be running, or just walking, or maybe some combination of the two; but I made the decision yesterday that the excuses end and I will do SOMETHING today!
It started out as a walk but at some point I stopped to stretch and off I went. I would say I’m still not very comfortable as a runner, I don’t feel my long hiatus made much of a difference. I fairly easily kept pace with the amount of running I was doing before my injury, I even think I could have done more but I didn’t want to push it. I noticed a few things that I need to work on.
1. Breathing: Still an issue, but better. I was able to push a little further before feeling like I had to stop today. Yes, yes I know it will get better, but try telling my lungs that!
2. Pace: I am having a very hard time keeping a nice slow pace. I know that slowing down will give me a better opportunity to keep running without stopping, but without even knowing it I speed up and find myself loosing my breath. I feel like I need a click track or something to help me keep a steady pace.
I am sure there are a few of you out there in the same boat as me. We may never run a marathon, but I think it is important to get some exercise and take care of ourselves. So join me in being a healthier beer geek, even if it means our run streaks consist of a couple of blocks everyday. It’s better than nothing!
