Terrapin Samurai Krunkles
Athens Georgia’s Terrapin has released their 17th “Side Project” beer, the playfully named Samurai Krunkles. A new twist in their ongoing Krunkles series, this IPA iteration is filled with goodness from Japan, specifically green tea, jasmine rice and ginger.
I’m not a fan of super hoppy beers; but this one is well-balanced with sweet malts and the fresh ginger, jasmine scent and slight bit of grapefruit create a refreshing drink that’s easily paired with Asian delicacies like sushi or noodle bowls. The body and color of the beer are reminiscent of a hefeweizen, with nice golden-orange cloudiness. Calling this beer an IPA may be a bit of a disservice to the beer and misleading to many American IPA fans. Regardless, it’s a solid, interesting beer that’s well worth seeking out, especially if you’re into green tea and Asian flavors stirred up in your hops.
