Wake-N-Bake is part of Terrapin’s Monster Beer Tour series of beers. Wake-N-Bake (as you might expect) is a coffee flavored beer. In this case, it is a big oatmeal imperial stout that clocks in at a decent 8.1% ABV. The coffee is very heavy in this iteration (2012). Even before tasting this beer you get a sense of the coffee on the nose. In fact there is little else to the nose. My first thought was cup of coffee. The great thing about this beer is how smooth it is. The oatmeal rounds this beer out so that the alcohol burn, which is present, and the coffee bitterness doesn’t overwhelm. Appearance wise it very much what I expect from an imperial stout, dark and lovely. There is little head, only a slight brown lacing. The mouthfell is thick, almost syrupy. This beer coats the glass and the throat as it goes down. I wish this wasn’t a seasonal beer. It’s not an everyday drink but I could have more than a few in the winter.
