AleSmith Old Numbskull
AleSmith Old Numbskull is an American Barleywine. Although there is no bottle date, my notes indicate that this is the 2012 vintage. I don’t have any reason to lie to myself so I will assume that is true! This is a really fantastic smelling barleywine, I’m getting some rich toffee, molasses, raisins and a hint of orange on the nose. The taste tries to follow the nose, but kind of falls off a little. The toffee and raisin are there, followed by a blast of alcohol taste provided by the 11% ABV. The finish has a combination of minty and citrus hops, somewhat recalling the citrus I smelled earlier. Although this solid barleywine is well worth the effort to try, I can’t see myself trading or paying large shipping costs to drink this again. If I saw it on the shelf somewhere, however, I will be grabbing one to haul back home for sure! Definitely looking forward to finding a bottle of the Barrel-Aged Old Numbskull someday as well!
