Mikkeller / Three Floyds Majsgoop
Majsgoop is an American Barleywine, sort of maybe. Big thanks once again to Aaron for this one, the latest in the collaboration line between Mikkeller and Three Floyds. The “goop” series, as best as I can tell, takes the Barleywine format and subs out the massive barley addition with an alternative ingredient. In this case it was corn.
In all honesty this smells and tastes much more like an American style Double IPA, not a Barleywine. Big sweet malt is followed by flavorful and bitter hops. The corn is not necessarily adding anything flavor wise that I can detect, but I guess it could be creating the intensely dry finish.
It is unfair to judge this as a barelywine at all since it is a “cornwine”, but that is the category this beer squeezes into the best. (You can listen to our extensive debate on this during podcast #43) I would suggest chilling and cracking that bottle if you have one and like a good DIPA!
