Goose Island The Muddy
Goose Island The Muddy is an American Double/Imperial Stout that the label says features… Amplified sweetness with Licorice notes. The sweetness is right up my ally, but the licorice makes me opt for a single bottle as apposed to a full 4 pack.
The pour on this stout is wonderful, it has the perfect black color with a two finger tan head. The smell is pretty awesome too, very sweet with a bit of roast in the background. I’m getting the licorice on the nose, but it is not offensive or too strong, good sign for the taste to come. I feel like this beer smells a good bit sweeter than it really is. A quick blast of caramel like sweetness is overtaken by roasted malts and touch of hop bitterness sticking to the sides of the tongue. The licorice is there but again it isn’t huge. It actually blends quite well with some very strong dark fruit notes that are all over this beer. (I’m not a big black licorice fan, so for me the surprising lack of licorice was a plus. For others this is going to be a huge letdown)
It’s no Bourbon County Brand Stout or anything like that, but I feel like this is an above average stout. Well worth a 4 pack to have on hand for a nightcap when you don’t feel like pulling from your cellar.
