North Coast Old No. 38 Stout
North Coast Old No. 38 Stout is an Irish Dry Stout. This is one of those beers I remember really loving when I first tried it several years ago. I haven’t seen it around for a while, then it showed up unexpectedly in Savannah this Fall. I figured this was a good time to revisit and review this one!
The appearance is fine for a bottled Irish Stout, and the mild aroma is pretty typical for the style as well. The taste brings in strong roasted malts and barley with a touch of toffee. A nice light sweetness follows, a little dry cocoa maybe in the aftertaste. Fairly full bodied for an Irish Dry Stout, but it really needs a nitro tap to make it feel the way it should.
My tastes have changed a lot since I first had this, but for an American made Irish Stout in a bottle… it’s really quite good.
