Westbrook Mexican Cake Double Barrel Aged 2014
The aroma has an amazing amount of coconut mixing with rich dark chocolate, mild roast, mild bourbon, and a bit of cinnamon and vanilla. The taste follows suit very well. Again I’m getting lots of rich dark chocolate fudge and sweet vanilla that is blending with some mild roasted malts. Right in the middle of the taste is a strong blast of straight whiskey that clings to the tongue. This is then replaced by the sweet chocolate and coconut again, much like an Almond Joy or Mounds bar. All of that unexpected coconut is reminiscent of rum barrel aging to me. Any indication of habanero heat is absolutely gone from this variant. So incredibly different than regular Mexican Cake, with both being outstanding in their own way.
This was an outstanding beer drinking experience, endless thanks to BDR buddy Ben P. for hauling this back from the release day in Mt. Pleasant!
