Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin
Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin is an American IPA brewed with natural Grapefruit flavors. I’m going to just go ahead and say it, I don’t get the hype surrounding Sculpin. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a solid beer and I’ve ordered it several times at bars and restaurants. I just don’t get why people fawn over it though. Grapefruit Sculpin on the other hand is quite outstanding, at least to my palate.
The smell of this is absolutely crazy, it smells pretty much just like ruby red grapefruit juice. A big strong whiff will reveal a little bit of sweet caramel malt base. The taste is surprisingly not as grapefruit forward, but it does have a nice juicy taste. It mixes very well with the base beer, cutting a large portion of those big onion/pine hops you get in regular Sculpin. The caramel malt base brings in a perfect amount of sweet to balance all that bitter grapefruit and hops. Light, refreshing and so easy to drink.
I really hope this becomes a regular on our shelves on the east coast, this stuff is delicious.
