Port City Porter
For some reason I’m a little leery of beers simply named for the style. I know that makes no rational sense, but I did hesitate before adding Port City Porter to the mixed six I grabbed in Virgina.
Perfect porter appearance, very dark brown, almost black, with a nice tan head. A decent aroma, it is roasty and sweet. The taste brings in some pleasant flavors, this is a bit more complex than I was expecting. Tasting chocolate and some coffee for sure, but there are subtle notes of cherry & plum, chicory, licorice, a touch of soy sauce, and a tobacco bitterness mixing with some molasses on the finish.
So my weird style name bias is proven wrong yet again, this is a solid beer. Not sure I would go out of my way for it, but this would find it’s way into my fridge from time to time if it was a local option.
