Rapp Brewing Toyfel
Rapp Brewing Toyfel is a Quadrupel aged in Bourbon Barrels. The brewery had bottles of this for sale for $12 when I stopped in for a beer or two. What they didn’t tell you on the chalk board was that they were 12oz bottles!! The bartender rang me up without mention of the bottle size and needless to say I was a bit irritated when he came back with neither a 22oz or 750ml bottle. I was on vacation and didn’t feel like dealing with it, so I just left with my $1 per ounce beer.
The beer is a murky reddish brown with a thin head that was gone before I could get a picture. Nice aroma with a lot of bourbon, hints of sweet caramel, vanilla and oak. The taste starts with a lot of bourbon that is an ever present element to the flavor of this beer. Some mild dark fruits are there as well. A bit of apple tartness that I was not expecting in the taste, but it grew on me after a few sips. A little toffee, chocolate, burnt sugar and a hint of oak round out the flavor.
Look, this beer was good, but there is no way this is $12/12 oz good! It isn’t even close to the best BA Quad I’ve had. You are certainly free to charge whatever you want (or need) to for your beer Rapp Brewing, but you need to let people know what they are paying for.
