Odell Fernet Aged Porter
Odell Fernet Aged Porter is a blend of 50% Porter and 50% Fernet barrel-aged Porter. The barrels we provided by Leopold Bros. First off, I’m not a spirit or hard liquor nerd. I will drink a bit of “the hard brown stuff” on occasion, but I’m a beer guy. That said, I had no idea what Fernet was when this was offered to me, and I had not nearly the reaction of several others in our group had when they heard the name of this beer.
The pour is very typical porter, chocolaty brown with a thin but good head. The aroma is intense, a lot of licorice and a cacophony of spices on the nose, too much to really pick out anything in particular. The taste starts with a nice sweet cream followed by mint, more “spices”, roots, ginger and mild dark roast makes up the flavor profile for me.
This is certainly not your every day Porter, but I am very glad I got a chance try this one.
