Anchor Old Foghorn
Anchor Old Foghorn is an English Barleywine, 8.8% ABV. I found this dusty bottle at one of our local beer stores. A quick check of the Anchor website confirms this was bottled in December of 2014, so this has almost one year of age on it.
The beer pours with reddish gold color, a nice head to start but it faded to literally nothing while I searched out the date code online. A solid malt forward aroma with a hint of dark fruits are hitting the nose. The beer has a smooth body with some mild carbonation, that might be due to the months it sat on the warehouse and/or shelf, but I kind of like how this feels. The taste brings some big malts, slight tart grape, raisin, and a bit of earthy hop flavor that has a hint of citrus. It seems to have aged rather well!
This is a really nice sipper, less intense but no less flavorful than a hop bomb American Barleywine. A perfect barleywine to have on hand year round.
