Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA
Weyerbacher Double Simcoe is an American Double/Imperial IPA that is single hopped with Simcoe hops, 9% ABV. This bottle had the most amount of sediment I have ever seen! It’s not even out of date or anything, it has a best by date of 12/12/15, opened on 10/18/15.
Gently poured to avoid the yeast collected in the bottom of the bottle, but it isn’t too surprising this was a cloudy amber color. There is a nice white fluffy head that remains for a majority of the drinking experience. The aroma is sweet with some generic citrus notes. The taste brings a quick blast of of citrus hops, hints of pine, and some sweet caramel malts upfront. This is followed by some flavorful earthy hops with just a hint of spiciness at the finish. I find this beer to be not too bitter for a DIPA while retaining a ton of hop flavor. Maybe a little syrupy in the mouth-feel, but this is an excellent beer overall.
A bit of a forgotten classic craft beer here. Do yourself a favor and grab a bottle or two if you haven’t in a while, this really is an excellent Double IPA.
