Rockmill Brewery Saison Noir
Rockmill Brewery Saison Noir is a Saison/Farmhouse Ale, 8% ABV. I could be wrong, but I am reading the stamp that reads 090914 under the bar code as a bottle date. We’ll assume this was bottled in the Fall of 2014.
I popped the cork off and waited for a few seconds before going to find a glass, I found a fountain of foam cascading over the bottle neck onto my kitchen counter when I returned. The pour is quite nice though, it is certainly “noir” with a nearly stout like dark color and tan head. The aroma is also a bit more stout than saison with a rich combination of chocolate and raspberries. The taste breaks with the stout connection and is certainly very interesting to say the least. This same raspberries and chocolate from the aroma is then followed by some mildly sweet raisin, tart cherries, and a little smokiness that evolves in the taste and aroma after the beer warms up a little. There is just a bit of a cardboard flavor in the mix as well, which is either the tobacco finish advertised on the bottle, or a touch of oxidation at this point.
This beer was a rather enjoyable surprise, big thanks to Kevin for this one!
