Highland Brewing Mandarina IPA
Highland Brewing Mandarina IPA is an American IPA brewed with Mandarina Bavaria and Huell Melon hops, 5% ABV. Canned on 07/26/16, opened on 08/30/16. I was a bit surprised to see that this is a another new year round IPA, maybe at 5% this is their take on a session IPA?
The beer pours with a lovely golden color and a nice white head to start. As the head fades it starts to look a bit soapy with big bubbles, it then settles to a slight ring around the edge of the glass. I have some experience at work with the two hops used and the aroma has them all over it. A wonderful mixture of sweet oranges, muted melon, and some moderate pine and earth make up what I get on the nose. The malt base has a wonderful dry cracker flavor to it, and that is complimented by some bright orange citrus from the hops. The more earthy notes from the nose come in on the second half of the taste, then we are lead to a lingering cracker malt and mildly bitter finish. This is IPA has a great flavor, but the aroma really pops as the beer warms up.
I’ve been impressed with most of the new beers coming out of Highland over the past year or so, and this one is another solid addition to the portfolio.
