Broken Bow Brewery Barley Wine Ale Aged In Rye Whiskey, Bourbon & Red Wine Barrels
Broken Bow Brewery Barley Wine Ale Aged In Rye Whiskey, Bourbon & Red Wine Barrels clocks in at 14% ABV. The bottle date was added by hand and reads 10/16. The name says it all, no further description needed I guess. I came by this beer via my boss and his membership in The Rare Beer Club, thank you Sir!
The beer pours with a cola color that has some very subtle red highlights, a nice looking medium dark tan head that settled down to nice ring. A sweet, complex and engaging aroma starts with a strong amount of the red wine barrel coming through. Before long notes of chocolate, caramel, mild bourbon, vanilla and just a hint of dark fruits become evident as well. The taste is similar, but isn’t quite as sweet as the aroma. The palate also starts with the same strong notes of red wine. A lot of dry oak and vanilla follows immediately and blends with the flavor of chocolate covered caramels. The finish brings considerable bourbon and/or rye whiskey and alcohol heat that is mixing with a little bit of hop bite.
A fantastic drinking experience overall. Not sure how limited this beer was, but I’d say it is well worth a try if you can snag a bottle.
