Dogfish Head Beer To Drink Music To ’17 is an American Blonde Ale brewed with kiwi and hibiscus, 6.8% ABV. Bottled on 02/11/17, opened on 03/11/17. The label also says that this “Tropical Blonde” is the official beer of Record Store Day!
The beer pours crystal clear with a fairly dark golden color for the style. There is also some serious red highlights, so I guess that makes this a strawberry blonde? (sorry) A flimsy off white head settles down to a solid ring around the glass in short order. The aroma is certainly tropical, big notes of papaya and mango along with a more generic citrus as well. The taste follows right along with what the aroma has me anticipating. More sweet tropical and bright citrus flavor hits the palate immediately. The kiwi makes itself known more towards the finish with a little of the distinct sweet/tart/slightly earthy flavor you get from that fruit. Lightly bitter with a little floral hop flavor and bite on the finish. It is certainly possible that the hibiscus is lending some flavor here, but I can’t quite say for sure. Perfectly acceptable carbonation and mouth-feel, the crispness works well with the overall taste of the beer.
Dogfish Head doesn’t offer up a classic American Blonde Ale, but did you really expect them to? It’s a well timed release as the days get warmer and longer, at least as they are here in the south.
