Great Divide Hop Disciples
Great Divide Hop Disciples is an American IPA, 6.2% ABV, canned on 01/06/17, opened on 02/17/17. The concept behind the beer according to the Great Divide website: Hop Disciples – Rotating Hop Project takes a bright, clean IPA and puts a different hop variety at the forefront of the sensory experience every year. The inaugural release features Idaho 7… It has been a while since I’ve seen a new beer from these guys, so I’m excited to check this one out.
The beer pours with a hazy lemon blonde color and has a thick off white head with outstanding retention. I am not familiar with Idaho 7 hops, but if the aroma is any indication I may have a new hop crush. Hop notes of light citrus, sweet melon, and herbal tea notes dominate the nose. The taste has a much more dank and piney flavor that is complemented by some, grapefruit rind, black tea, and a biscuit and cracker malt base. The finish turns toward sticky pine/onion, drying yeast and general hop bitterness.
I’m more a fan of the aroma than the taste, but I’m a sucker for beers that feature a single hop. Especially when it’s a variety I’ve never experienced before.
